We're settling in for our second night here in the maternity ward at Hershey. At my doctor's appointment yesterday, Bean passed her non-stress test with flying colors. Her growth is right on for her gestational age, and her heart rate looks great. She was very active, kicking at the monitors and making her general displeasure with being disturbed very clear:P
However, my BP was high at the beginning of the appointment and hadn't gone down by the time we were done. So the doctors sat me down and said they were concerned that my BP was so high and not adjusting itself. So they were sending me for monitoring at labor and delivery a third time. So I called Tim and Mom, then took myself over to L&D. Instead of settling me into a little monitoring room, they put me in a delivery room (at least I don't need to go on a tour now). I was hooked up to monitors and a BP cuff, and the nurse attempted (and FAILED) to get an IV in the back of my hand, but managed to take blood for labs.
After a few bad BP readings, I was told that I was being admitted for monitoring. Doctors came and talked to me about steroid shots to help Bean's lungs and other systems develop faster. Another doctor came and talked to me about the risk of early delivery or increased risk of needing a c-section if my BP couldn't be controlled during labor. I had to sign a consent form for a c-section in case of emergency.
Mom got there and helped me calm down so a different nurse could come and put in an IV line. They hooked me up to a drip for awhile, brought me dinner, gave me the first of 2 steroid shots, then moved me to the maternity ward once my labs came back OK. By that time, Tim was there.
We got settled in, met a new nurse, and tried to relax some. But due to stress, noise, and discomfort (and with no help from the steroids), I didn't get much sleep.
They come every couple of hours to check my BP and temperature. They check Bean's heartrate 3x per day, and they flush the IV line twice--once in the morning, once in the evening.
We've seen several different doctors, none of whom can really tell us how long we can expect to be here. A maternal-fetal medicine doctor told us that my BP was high, but not high enough to "treat". So--more monitoring. Some people seem to imply that we'll be here a matter of days as long as no other symptoms come up, some seem to imply that we'll be here until Bean is born. We really don't know. We're just going one day at a time for now. If we hear anything new or different, we'll be sure to post it to make sure everyone stays on the same page.
But for now, we're just trying to make sure we're relaxed as we can be while living in a hospital room and that Bean is staying healthy. That's all we can really ask for at this point.
Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and visits. It means so much to us.
My first comment from my phone didn't work so hear goes again :-) I hope everything works out for you, Tim and baby Bean. I will keep you guys in my prayers that everything works out and the baby Bean stays in the oven a little longer and you get better and get to go home, I know easier said then done, but Mommy needs to stay stress free and relaxed!! Keep us posted Mom :-)
